Track and list all changed metadata in a Sandbox

Change logs, especially change log reports, are especially useful when you are working on many metadata components in your Sandbox Org.

Trace your changes

When the time comes to make a deployment via a change set (or other basic deployment tool), it is possible to miss some item that should be deployed. This is all the more likely, the bigger the scope of work that has been done.

Generating a change log report in your Sandbox Org will allow you to trace all the changes you have done and make a list of all things that should be deployed.

The following support article describes in detail how to generate report logs, and should be reviewed before taking the assessment for this module.

Generating a list of changes is also useful when you work as a consultant for an organization that tightly controls all deployments. In this case being able to provide the team with a list of metadata that is supposed to be deployed will save you a lot of time.

Multiple people sharing the same Sandbox

It is a common practice that admins will share the same Sandbox Org to work on and deploy different sets of changes. This usually happens when the team runs out of Sandboxes on their license and they end up sharing to do their work.

You can use the change log report to filter / group changes by the people who have done them and narrow down the list of metadata that should be deployed for a given admin.

Again, the same support article describes in detail how to filter, order, and group, report logs, and should be reviewed before taking the assessment for this module.

Note: for deleted metadata the user will show as “undefined”. This is because we are unable to retrieve information on deleted metadata, as it no longer exists.

What’s next

Next, you will take a short, theory and practical quiz. Select it from the menu below.

This quiz will help you to recognise the skills and knowledge you have gained, and identify any areas you still need to explore and learn.

Remember, you can revisit these pages, or ask us for help if you get stuck. Once you pass the quiz, click “Next Module” to move on to Module 2.
