RASCI Matrix

RASCI responsibility matrix is a business analysis tool that can be used to identify roles and responsibilities in a business process. It is a great way of resolving any procedural conflicts and increasing transparency of processes and roles in a company.

Why use the RASCI model?

  • Clarification of responsibilities: so that everybody knows exactly what is expected of them at any given point in the process
  • Employee induction: joiners can quickly understand their role in the company
  • Analysis & division of workload: activities can be distributed effectively between teams and team members to ensure every resource is utilized and not overworked.
  • Conflict Resolution: provides the basis for discussion and resolution of interdepartmental conflicts
  • Leaner diagrams: allows to draw leaner diagrams and helps to avoid proliferating lots of basic activity boxes

Within the Elements platform, we rely on the RASCI matrix for process activities which stands for:

RASCI matrix and diagrams

RASCI can be an extremely useful tool in drawing UPN diagrams. It can help generate better insights and make diagrams leaner and easier to understand in the process. Let’s compare how a UPN diagram can be transformed with the use of RASCI.

In the example below we have a side-by-side comparison of how the same business logic can look completely different based on whether we use or don’t use RASCI. Activities #1 to #3 show a flow of designing a recruitment process for a new role. We see that a line manager is the one who must initiate the action and it is them who ultimately have to sign-off on the job specification and how the candidates will be processed. The HR team must take notes from the line manager and design the process best suited for a given role.

However, since this is a simple, linear process, with the use of RASCI we can summarize all of that information into just one box. The HR team is responsible for the design, while the line manager is accountable for it. Any additional details are captured as supporting information on the box.
